The short answer: no, it doesn't
Using compatible ink does not void your printer warranty. This isn't a marketing claim — it's federal law. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975 protects consumers and businesses from exactly this kind of restriction.
What the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act actually says
The Act governs consumer product warranties in the United States and is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Two provisions matter for ink:
- No tie-in sales. A manufacturer generally cannot condition warranty coverage on your using only its branded supplies — unless it provides those supplies free of charge or has obtained a waiver from the FTC. In practice, almost none have.
- Burden of proof is on the manufacturer. To deny a warranty claim, the manufacturer must prove that the third-party product actually caused the specific defect. They cannot deny coverage just because compatible ink was present in the machine.
The FTC has publicly reminded companies that telling customers their warranty is void if they use third-party parts or supplies is generally unlawful. "Warranty void if non-OEM ink used" stickers do not override federal law.
What this means for your printer
If your MemJet mailing/label printer, DTF printer, or postage meter develops a fault, the manufacturer must honor a valid warranty claim unless they can demonstrate that the compatible ink you used is what caused that particular fault. Normal use of quality, spec-matched ink gives them nothing to point to.
The one thing to check: warranty vs. service contract
A manufacturer's warranty is protected by Magnuson-Moss. A private lease or service contract is a separate agreement that can include its own supply terms. If your mailing machine is leased or on a managed-service plan, read that contract's supply clause. For machines you own outright, you're free to choose your ink.
